I realized that I probably should post about Patch's junior-year activities before I begin thinking about his senior year. As an added benefit, reliving his junior allows me to pretend I have more time before he heads to college! So, this is the story of Patch's junior year.

Spirit Week and Homecoming

Patrick was Quail Man for charater day and Lord knows what for decade day! We had some of his friends over for dinner before the dance. We are blessed that our kids have such great friends.

In December, Patrick got his junior ring. It was a wonderful celebration and they all had a great time at the dance!

Snowmageddon!

In February, Patrick was inducted into Tri-M, the National Music Honor Society. All three of the kids are members of this honor society.

Life Happens

Life moves really fast. Just a short time ago Ryan finished her freshman year in college and was home for the summer; well, at least for a couple of days before her side trip to Greece. While she was gone, Meghan finished her junior year in college and came home for the summer. Shortly after, Patrick finished his junior year in high school. Ryan came home from Greece and all five of us were finally together again. Together and ready for a stress-free, relaxing summer; anxious for time to regroup as a family.

And, then life happened. The kids had jobs, friends to visit, trips planned, a college search, concerts to attend, family to hang out with, and all with one car to share. In a desparate attempt to keep track of their different work schedules and social calendars, and coordinate that within our schedules, I learned to parent via text message and bbm. It worked. They worked it out. They made it to work and fun. And, in the midst of the chaos, there was plenty of laughter, some tears, and tons of love.

And, then, I woke up one day last week and realized it's over. Time to book flights to Miami. Time to plan a return to trip to Charleston. Time to schedule Patrick's senior pictures and buy his books for senior year. Time to make sure his uniforms are in good shape (Lord knows I don't want to buy any of that for one year).

Life is happening. Our summer craziness has evolved into a chaotic frenzy of back-to-school activity. The kids are stressed. I'm stressed. Life is happening.

And, deep down, I know the magic is in the journey. So, I will stop, take a deep breath, and force myself to focus on the laughter and the love. And, if that doesn't work, while the girls are gone, I have these to remind me how truly blessed I am!

Opportunities and Experiences

I will forwarn you ... there are a ton of pictures in this post. Brian and Patrick are safely home from their mission trip to Gallup, New Mexico. They helped some folks who needed it, bonded with people they might otherwise never have known, experienced different cultures, got a little spiritual enrichment, and came home changed for the better. Enjoy the pictures. And, thanks Dave, for being a better photographer!

Powerful

Brian and Patrick spent Sunday at the Grand Canyon. After several days of mission work, they were ready for a break. This is the photo Brian sent at the end of their day. Amazing.

Brian said this trip has been so powerful for him, more so than the mission trips to Mississippi the last two summers. The damage from Katrina was every where. It was clear what work needed to be done and there was a sense of accomplishment at the end of every day.

In New Mexico, their work focuses on meeting the needs of the poor and the elderly. The needs are equally as great, just subtle.

Whether they are hanging drywall in Mississippi or setting up classrooms for a new school on an indian reservation, they have made a difference in the lives of those in need. Pretty powerful experiences.

Me: "What the ..."

Brian: In a sweet, I want something voice. "Here's some coffee. I know it's early but we've really go to get moving."

Me: "okay. Okay. OKAY."

Brian is off to get Patrick up and I'm downing the coffee like I'm in college again.

Patrick stumbles into the bathroom grunting responses to Brian's incessant questions.

Me: "He's got everything. I stayed up helping him finish his packing last night."

Brian: Clearly iritated at my iritiation at his incessant questions. "I am just checking. I don't want him to forget anything."

Okay, time to regroup. Check my iritability. Forget that's its entirely too early in the morning after entirely too little sleep. Remember why were up and having these conversations.

Brian and Patrick and about 30 other people from our church left for Gallup, New Mexico for a week of service activities on an Indian Reservation and with the Little Sisters of the Poor. As part of this trip, they will have mass at the Grand Canyon!

Athens, Yikes!

hey I went on the volcano tour yesterday and then went to dinner and a wine tasting for dr Morris's retirement. It was super fun and we danced and everyone wanted me to sing...embarrassing. Only 6 more days!!! Is it just you coming to pick me up or is everyone coming?

Ahhh, Santorini!

Hey i'm in santorini now and it's beautiful. We may have two free days here instead of one which is awesome!!! i don't hate it. the volcano tour is monday and then we leave for athens two days later than that. I'm a little nervous about athens but i think it will be fine as long as everyone stays together. I miss you guys!! i'm trying to take lots of pictures but i feel like i'm slacking. but we're making a facebook group and everyone is putting their pictures up so we will have lots to look through. The pool here is freaking sweet...and the beach is black sand so it's cool but burns the shizz out of my feet. but i mean it's whatever.

Greek Update

I am not going to even try to top this one ... oh, how I miss my girl. She makes me laugh and I love her so ...

Hey,

I'm in Gouves now...it's supposed to be our nicest hotel so that's pretty cool. we had a half day at the beach yesterday and will probably have one again tomorrow. I tried rabbit. It's not bad. I'm sure dad will be happy that i'm branching out...however, i saw a MacDonalds to day and about peed my pants. I tried to get some dog to lead me to the Big Mac but i don't think he understood...he probably only speaks Greek. There are dogs everywhere, but don't worry i've named all of them...Balto. It seems fitting, except for stupid Kujo who didn't understand Super Size my fries and chocolate shake today. I've gotten A's on both my test and report so far, but whether i really am a master of Mycennean Palaces, or whether it was because Dr. Morris took several shots of Ouzo at lunch no one will really ever be able to tell. I have come up with several nicknames for the people on the trip that i can not wait to divulge to you further, but to heighten your anticipation here are a few: Indian Jones, Old man River, pringles, and Balls. Just marinate on that for a while. I see you in less than two weeks and I can't wait to eat real good american food...like store bought pizza, chipotle, and china kitchen. YUM.

Guess who called!

Woo Hoo! We got a phone call from Ryan this morning! Brian and I were like little kids - we were so excited to hear her voice.

They are in Athens waiting to catch the Ferry over to Crete. She has pretty regular wireless internet service in Athens and apparently has been trying to email since yesterday. My inbox at work was full (way too busy at work) so the emails were getting returned. Another girl on the trip has an iPhone and let her use to call since the emails were being returned. So excited ... so grateful to this young lady.

Okay, so here's the update. They were hiking in Delphi this morning and then headed to Athens to catch the ferry (overnight trip) to Crete. They were sitting in a Starbucks when she called. The trip has gotten soooo (Ryan speak) much better. They are not spending as many long days back to back and they have a little bit more time off. She gave her first oral report - on the Trojan War, and felt pretty good about it. The students on the trip are all getting along well (no drama) and she's thrilled about that. Still not thrilled about the food, but digging the exchange rate.

They went out to a club in Delphi and some of the local boys were enjoying the company of some of the girls on the trip. So I asked. "Were you one of those girls?" "Me? No. I'm sorry, but I don't think Greek boys are very attractive." I just sighed and privately thanked God.

While we were on the phone, I could hear some commotion in the background. Ryan was so excited! Some of the girls found a nail salon and they decided to all get manicures! We said our goodbyes and our world traveler was off again.

We miss you, Ryan. We are so thrilled that you have the opportunity to take this trip. Be smart. Be a leader. Make good choices. Love you bunches!

Delphi and on to Sitia

We have heard from our world traveler! She is really enjoying the trip, even more so now that she's used to the long hours and found some food she likes. She said the group is wonderful and really getting along well. She will be in Delphi for two days. Here they will see the Sanctuary of Athena and the Delphi Museum. From there, they will travel by ferry to the island of Crete and the city of Sitia. Amazing to think that these are the things our daughter is getting to experience - so awed by this!

Live from Olympia

Ryan just sent an email. They have arrived in Olympia and she said the hotel is much nicer here. I have posted some pictures (from the internet, not sent by Ryan) of the hotel they're staying in and some of the sites they'll visit. She said she's really busy with the course work, but feels like she's handling it. She is having a good time, but getting a little homesick! Bless her heart. I told her to close her eyes and feel a huge hug and big smooch from her momma. Hopefully, that will tide her over, and this too shall pass! Enjoy the photos.

Weekend Update ... from Greece

Ryan sent an email last night. She is loving every minute of the trip and is absolutely capturing all her memories in her journal. She said she plans to write a book about the trip ... we'll see about that. She said she's a little surprised at how much she misses all of us. I'm not. In her heart, she's a family girl. She did say she had some sad news. Due to the issues in Athens, they may have to stay some extra days in Santorini rather than spending the last three days in Athens! I'm having a tough time being sad about that one!

They are leaving Napflion and heading to Olympia tomorrow. They'll spend two days in Olympia and then on to Delphi. Can't wait to hear from her again and will be sure to post when I do!

Greece Update ... Day 2

Day two and I'm already in love. This place is like a dream. I miss you guys like crazy though, I keep grabbing for my phone at the end of the day to see if I have any texts...and then I remember that it's turned off. I'm already a little tanner so I'm not hating that. Sorry it takes me so long to email you but the internet is ridiculous and we didn't get back until 8PM our time today :( I'll try and keep you as updated as I can though.

Everyone is getting along really well and it's really chill. I saw the temples of Zeus and Apollo today and swam in the Mediterranean Sea. Big ole NBD (no big deal). Miss and love you.

The Percussion Section Prayer

Archbishop Spalding High School's music students competed in Virginia Beach this year. We took 260 high school students who performed with six instrumental groups and six vocal groups to Virgina Beach April 22-24, 2010.

I realize I'm a kid fan, and not just of my own, but of kids in general. So, my angle is that I believe in these kids and all the potential they have plus what they have yet to realize.   Each year, and I've been a part of band trips since Meghan was 10 years old, I am more and more amazed by these kids. They represent all that is good in kids today. They are committed, kind, compassionate, polite, fun-loving, wonderful kids. This year's trip was no exception.

Well, except ... for one thing!

So, let me set the stage. My job on these trips is to make sure kids get where they're supposed to be on time, dressed appropriately and with all the stuff they need to perform. Some might say t's a pretty tough job. But, as noted above, these kids are awesome!

As I am walking back from the warm-up room after making sure the Wind Ensemble students were settled in and warming up with the director, I look over to the entrance to the hall and see this group (photo). This is the percussion gang. They are gathered in a group, much like football players before a game. They are chanting and it's getting louder and louder. I am kind of waiting for Ray Lewis to pop up and start asking about dogs. At any rate, they rile themselves into quite a fury, break huddle with a yell and start moving equipment into the hall and onto the stage.

I look at one of the dad's and ask what apparently is the most ridiculous question ever asked. I say, "what was that?" And, the answer, "oh, that's just the prayer." I say, "the what?" And the response is "the prayer." Now, this didn't look like a prayer to me, so naturally I am intrigued.  Noticing the perplexed look, he goes on to explain.

"Your son started this freshman year. Before every performance this percussion group gathers in a circle and says a prayer.  Some are somber and some are roudy, but still, its a prayer. Its what they do. Didn't you know that? Haven't you ever seen this before?" I answer, "No, I had no idea. But, that was one of the coolest things I have ever seen!"  The dad says, "I know." Like a true mom, I say, "We should get this on video." The dad, with a look of shock and exasperation on his face says, "absolutely not.  That would ruin it."

Huh?

Then, I get the real explanation, which is confirmed by the members of the percussion group later. They tell me, "It's a guy thing. You wouldn't understand. It's what we do, but it's only for us. No girls and no video allowed!"

I feel completely put in my place. At the same time, I am deeply proud of my son and his friends, and really grateful I got to see it!

Safe Arrival Call

WHEW! I knew it would be a while until we heard from Ryan. I knew they were going to have a tough time making the new connection in Rome to Athens. And, this whole time change thing ... nuts!

Okay, I'm not a stalker, but I am a mom. And, given that I am a mom, I do have inalienable rights to worry, sometimes even obsessively. I can feel the stress rising in my esophagus. So, I found the time change converter on line and downloaded that. Then, I found the Alitalia website and tracked her Alitalia flight from JFK into Rome. The only way they made the connecting flight was if they were gold medal sprinters and someone held the plane for them.

I take a deep breath. Then, I take another one. Okay, so we talked about this at JFK. What happens if you miss the connection? Who do you call? Who do you talk to? Thank God I am crazy busy at work and people keep interupting my obsession to get work done!

I incessently check email. Please tell me this Ipod Touch thing works. We bought the service so she could have access to email in the airports and other hotspots. We went over how to work it. I even gave her the "don't give up and don't accept NO speech!" (If you know something should work, don't give up, keep fighting with it unitl you make it work)

Still no email. I work late trying to keep my head above water there. I hit the grocery store on my way home. Patch is at a drum lesson. Brian's at his mom's. I put in a load of laundry. I hear the phone ring. Shoot, we still don't know how to work this digital voice thing with Comcast. (#@%$#@). I run upstairs and miss the call. I check my cell phone - no calls and no email. Phone rings again. Don't recognize the number. I answer it anyway and the sweetest, most delicate little voice is on the other end.

"Mom?' "Yes." "It's me. I'm here. I did it. We made it!" Yes, I cried (please refer to mom rights noted above). It turns out they did miss their connection in Rome and were delayed another five hours before catching their flight to Athens. They got in at 1:00 in the morning their time and she borrowed a phone to call me at 3:00 a.m. their time.

She sounded exhilirated. It reminded me of when she was little. She was the only kid in the crowd who couldn't swing by herself. She didn't want to be pushed anymore. She worked for hours and hours and finally she jumped off that swing mid-flight screaming, "Mom! I did it. I made it work!"

You go girl!

Oh, the places you'll go ...

Ryan is taking a two courses during a maymester program through school. Six credits in Greek culture and civilization. Now, if you're going to take six credits in Greek culture and civilization, doesn't it seems logical to take those courses in Greece!

On Tuesday, May 11, Brian and I drove Ryan to JFK in New York so she could begin what I hope will be the first of many amazing journeys. The plan: arrive at JFK in plenty of time to check in, get some money exchanged, go over some last minute advice and get her through security. We thought we had it planned perfectly - no long goodbyes and no tears from me!

Right. So, reality check. Flight is delayed five hours, guaranteed to miss the connection in Rome to Athens and the ticket counter isn't opening for another two hours. Yikes. Regroup. Gather with other C of C students going on the trip. Their professor was not with the group as he went ahead to ensure all was safe in Athens prior to their arrival. Not a bad idea, however it would be nice to have another representative from the school traveling with the students. I know, they're not in high school anymore. I know, they'll figure it out. But, I'm also a huge fan of less stress for all involved.

Only one or two students in the group had ever flown internationally before, so they were all a little out of their element. It's tough. They're college students and supposed to be burgeoning adults. However, they are still 19 year old kids. So, I put my momma hat on and we guided them through check in with luggage all the way to Athens, rebooking connecting flights in Rome, and exchanging some money so they would have Euros in Rome.

Everything happens for a reason. I think Ryan and the other students were glad we were there to help and I was so preoccupied with helping them that I didn't have time to worry! Mission accomplished.

We left after they made it through security. Ryan called a little while later to say they all got something to eat and then took out their books to begin studying and preparing for the four exams and two oral reports each will have throughout the trip.

It has happened so fast. My little girl has grown into quite a young woman. I am filled with pride. And, yes, there are some tears, too!

The Great College Road Trip - Round Up

Friday afternoon, about 1:00 p.m., I finally call the boys since I have not heard from them since Thursday afternoon. Brian answers, "oh, hey. sorry. probably should have called you." Right, story of my life. So, I take a really big deep breath and decide to let it go, especially since he had sweet baby Patch with him and I was curious how the trip was going.

Apparently, the hottest girl ever was in the Blacksburg Elevator. VA Tech does remind him of Hogwarts, just like Ryan said. Loved the location and the campus. However, he's concerned it may be a little too engineering oriented for him. Still on the list, just not as high as USC and Wake.

We are greatful that now, Patrick is thinking about what he likes and what he doesn't like, how to translate that into a future with a potential career. As much as he would love to get paid to sit around and drum all day long, the liklihood of that career is slim to none!

At the end, the boys arrive home exhausted with a renewed bond between them. They have tons of stories, great memories and some merchandise. Brian still wants to be in college and Patrick is excited about the opportunites that await him.

What will I do when they're all gone ...

Great College Road Trip - UPDATE

Sssh ... don't tell anyone I posted this picture of Patrick from Wake. Oh, how I love this school. And, woo hoo, he liked it to. Even got some merchandise; and some for the momma, too! I am trying as hard as I can not to get too excited. I know. I know. He's the one that has to go to school and find his way in the world. He has to go to a school that fits him. But I'm the momma and momma's just know best! Stay tuned ... they're in Blacksburg and will tour the hallowed halls of Virginia Tech tomorrow. I am really curious to see his reaction to this one. He was there when he was little, but now he has an entirely different perspective. Ryan loved it. What will Patrick think? Stay tuned ...

Easter 2010

The Great College Road Trip - UPDATE

Just left Clemson. Liked the campus. Liked the tour. Not enough information on academics, however the Brooks School of Performing Arts is really cool! No merchandise ... didn't want to make a premature purchase. Boys are way different than girls. I think we have two items from every school each of the girls visited along with baseball hats for Dad and soccer t-shirts for Patch! Probably should think about a yard sale. Stay tuned ...

The Great College Road Trip

Monday morning, o'dark thirty, Patrick and Brian head south for the great college road trip. No girls allowed. Why, because clothes are optional on the great college road trip. Goals: get a feel for schools you may be interested in; find the best southern barbeque. In fact, since I was not invited on this trip, I could easily have the order of the goals mixed.

Monday afternoon, arrive in Charleston. Surprise Ryan. She screams. Leaves the dining hall and heads to lunch with her father and her brother. Ryan provides Patch some advise while looking at colleges and the boys are off. Headed to Columbia and the University of South Carolina. Neither of the girls were allowed to even look at this school (think mascot), but should the same be true for Patch? Double standards are everywhere, we may as well embrace them. Patch likes the school and leaves with new attire -what's not to like! I received a picture of said attire, but was given strict instructions not to post the picture on the blog. Boys are so different than girls!

Find some barbeque for lunch and head west to Clemson. I get a text in the afternoon that they have arrived and are "milling" around the campus. So far so good. Tour tomorrow at o'dark thirty. These are the schools selected for the great college road trip. Stay tuned for more adventures from the boys!

Ryan is 19!

Today is Ryan's day. Finally! Patrick had his day and Meghan had her day. And, now, it's Ryan's turn.

I know it sounds cliche, but it really does seem like yesterday, Ryan, that you entered the world as quiet as a church mouse! The nurses and the doctor kept trying to make you cry and I was so upset asking them to leave you alone! You haven't changed since you were born. You have always had a quiet, reserved nature. That doesn't mean you weren't a typical child and a typical teenager - you definitely had your moments. But, for the most part, you were the one to stand back and observe, take things in stride. From an early age, you knew what was worth getting upset about and when it was best to let it go. I think God made you this way because he knew you would need that quiet strength to get you through some really tough times. And, that strength that served you so well when you were little, has also served you well into your young adult life. If you let it, it will serve you well in your future.

Ryan, your future is full of opportunities. The greatest success is being able to recognize these opportunities and be willing to take advantage of them. The story that is your life is well underway. Be to sure to write each chapter well and to fully develop your characters!

We love you, our little jumping frog, Yibbit! My little girl is a young woman, but these are the faces that stay in my mind every day!

It's been a while since ...

I blogged about the cutest little boy ever! Ezio brings such joy to our lives. He has started talking and it's hilarious. He calls Brian, "B" so everything is "hey, B", "ready, B". It's so cute. And, of course, his favorite, RyRy. He asks for her everytime he's at the house. I hate having to tell him she's at school. Often, while he and Luna are over, we'll Skype the girls. Ezio loves seeing himself on the computer screen and makes the funniest faces. His latest fascination is with magnets. He's figured out that they stick together if you put them the right way. And, that they "hide" between the doors on the refrigerator. He loves to "hide" them and get you to help him find them. His great-grandfather thinks he's a genious and says he is learning about magnetic fields. I'm not sure about that, Dad. I think he just thinks its fun to play with them. At any rate, isn't he adorable!

My sweet baby girl has started a blog! Ryan started her blog, Catch Me if You Can this week. She was born to write, just like she was born to sing! I know the music comes from Brian, so I am going to take credit for this one! I like to believe that my background has something to do with her inate ability, or at least with assisting her in cultivating her craft!

Ryan, just like reading can take you to places you've never been; writing can create places you want to go! Let the words flow, you have a gift. I believe in you. Believe in yourself and let the journey begin!

Happy Birthday precious angel, Meghan! Our sweet baby girl is 21. She's legal and legally an adult. But, in our hearts, she will always be our baby.

Sweet Baby Patch turns 17!

Today, my precious baby boy turns 17. How can that be? I am so proud of my son. He has grown into a wonderful young man. I am so thankful for all the people who came into his life and made it better by their presence. You know who you are, for you left a nickname as a memory for him. It doesn't matter whether you call him The Nub, or Bobo, or Boy, or Baby Jesus, or Pat or Patch. Your love for him made a difference in his life and we are all grateful. Today, as I look back on his life I am reminded of so many wonderful stories. The sack lunches he packed for the homeless, complete with Miller Lite because the homeless guy probably wants the same thing Daddy likes. His compassion for the Tricks Rabbit because all the kids in the commercial were mean to him and if he was Patrick's little brother, he would protect him. His craving for a "barbie-sized" Luke Skywalker so the girls would let him play barbies with them. I remember how in Patrick's "Blue World" you didn't have to wear shirts with buttons. I remember the day he walked down the hall to kindergarten with gallons of tears stored in his bottom lids, telling me it was okay and not to worry. He is an angel, a gift from God. I cherish every moment we've shared and look forward to those yet to come. Dad always tells him he's the greatest son a guy could ever have. Well, that's true. And, he's the greatest son a mom could ever have, too! We love you, Sweet Baby Patch. Enjoy your day.

Ode to James Thomas ...

I get a phone call from my brother-in-law JT. For those of you who know him, JT is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. Typically, when I get a call from JT, it's to tell me to turn to a particular channel for something important on television. Of course, I fall for this every time. And, when I change the channel as directed, I am staring straight into the fangs of some Burmese Python or other useless snake-like creature of which I am certifiably petrified. I scream. JT laughs. End of call.

In this particular call, he is very serious and wants to get straight to his point. I take a deep breath and prepare myself for the impending bad news. Sure that someone had died or been hurt in an accident, I calmly ask what's up. And, this is the respone I get ...

"Every day I sit at my computer working and what not and everyday it's the same thing." I say, "okay," confused and intrigued. He says, "when are you going to update that blog? I look every day wanting updates on you and Beej and the kids. I am assuming the girls are back at school." I say, "yes, they left last weekend." He says, "I would know that if you would update the BLOG!" Again, I say, "okay," sheepishly. He says, it's a three-day weekend, get on it!"

So, JT, here's the deal. My laptop is fried and it contains all my pictures. I am working on getting the laptop up and running and once that's done, I promise to be more diligent about blog updates.

Facebook has been fun in the interim, but I think the blog is where its at, or at least where it will be at when I get the laptop up and running. Thanks, JT for wanting to be in the know ...

Okay, I've been seriously lacking in my blogging duties. Not that this is an excuse, but we had one hell of a summer followed by a sad and lonely September. Meghan had surgery in the beginning of July. Brian's mom lost her battle with cancer in the middle of July. Meghan left for school in early August. Ryan left for school at the end of August. September was just sad - the girls are gone and Patrick is a junior in high school. How did that happen so fast? I will now fill in the details on our summer happenings - all to bring you up to date on the latest news in the Gunning family.

Mississippi 2009

Brian and Meghan and Ryan left last Saturday morning with 40 others from our church, Our Lady of the Fields for another mission trip to Project Hope and Compassion in Mississippi. Years later, there is still work to be done. Hundreds of volunteers make the trip to St. Ann's and Project Hope and Compassion to assist local residents in recovering from the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Patrick and I miss Brian and the girls very much, but we are so proud of them for making this trip and helping those truly in need.

We started a puzzle night with our good friends, the Pajerowski's. It took us about two months and help from about ten different people to complete this Disney Photo Mosaic puzzle. Look closely at Mickey's face and you can see that each piece is actually a picture from a disney movie! It was one of the toughest puzzles we've done.

We have a lot of fun working on these and it's a great way to spend time with the kids and their friends. Our next puzzle is also from Disney, but certainly not a photo mosaic - we just loved the picture. As you can see, we're just getting started in this one.

Summer vacation has officially begun in the Gunning house! Patrick took his last exam yesterday and today - he got to do this!

But not until he had cleaned out his locker only to bring it all home and dump it on his bedroom floor! How do I convince him that some of this stuff might be worth holding on to?

So, my guess is he'll spend a lot of time this summer with these! Thoughts?

We celebrated Ryan's graduation from highschool last night at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. It was a beautful night full of hope for the future!

Ryan and Alexis have been friends since they were born ... through preschool, elementary school, highschool and college, too! It wouldn't be a celebration without photos of Skippy and Peanut Butter!

We have these same pictures when Meghan graduated. It's been a joy to watch these sisters and friends grow over the years. Aren't they beautiful!

We had a blast having Ezio with us this weekend while his Mommy and Daddy were both in different weddings. As you can see, he is getting bigger and much more little boy than baby! In fact, that's what Patrick calls him, "little boy."

He is still a little guy, so he had his moments - not sure if Ryan made him mad or if he was just upset at not getting his way. At any rate, the face is great! And, he's such a cutie pie.

This past weekend, I was honored to chaperone Spalding's music festival competition trip. We took 250 high school students who participate in four instrumental groups, a stings ensemble, a guitar ensemble, and six choral groups to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The kids were amazing and the weather was beautiful! All of the groups performed very well receiving either excellent or superior ratings!

This marks the second event in Ryan's high school senior activities. She celebrated the senior breakfast in early April. This week many seniors are taking AP exams and looking forward to the traditional Senior Salute on Thursday afternoon. This Thursday and Friday mark Ryan's final Spalding Music Concert. She will perform with the Advanced Women's Choir on Thursday evening and play her oboe with the Wind Ensemble on Friday evening. Next week brings the prom and her senior voice recital. Graduation follows on the 27th.

Whew ... I am tired just posting about all these activities! And, of course, pictures to follow.

Not enough time ...

I am working on a redesign of the blog ... trying to learn HTML so that I can do it myself. It's a slow process as you can tell. I want the redesign up and working before I begin my memory lane posts, so I am constantly looking for "blog" time.

The trick - how do I find the time? Should I squeeze some time in between getting home from work and making dinner? Or while Patch is at his drum lesson? Or while Ryan is at her voice lesson? Even though the kids are older and much more self sufficient, our time is still monopolized by kid stuff!

This is how our weekend went ... Brian and Patch taking care of yardwork and washing cars. Ryan and I go to the mall to get a graduation dress, shoes for prom, jewelry for prom, bathing suits for the band trip, and new flips. We had three hours, and although it was a whirlwind trip through the mall, we got everything we needed! And, that was only Saturday. Saturday night we head to Baltimore for Patch's show at Bourbon Street. Sunday was filled with laundry, housework, grocery shopping and help with homework that wasn't done during the last week and a half off from school -for spring break - go figure!

So, now it's Monday and I am back at work. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't find time to work on the blog this weekend, but very greatful that I spent Saturday with Ryan. It won't be long before she heads off to ... stay tuned!

A scary trip to Miami

Last Friday, Brian and I were at home enjoying a relaxing evening. We were watching a movie with Patrick and his friend and Ryan. Then, the phone rings...it's Meghan's friend Jake calling to tell us Meghan is in the emergency room. I was completely overwhelmed. This was the exact reason I was so worried about her going to college so far away.

So, we realize that she's there with an infection and a high fever. Jake will call back with more information once the doctors have been in to see Meghan. Now, for those of you with young children, remember this when they are in college. Once they turn 18, you're out of the loop! We had to wait to talk to Meghan - we couldn't talk to the doctors.

About 10:00, Jake calls back to say the doctors have done blood tests, a urinalysis, and a sonogram and have decided that she has a serious kidney infection, complicated by a blockage and that they are admitting her for further tests and possible surgery. Panic ensues. We still can't talk to Meghan or the doctors so we decide we're going to fly down.

Saturday morning we make arrangements for help with the kids and Jackie and head to the airport. We arrive in Miami late on Saturday and have to sneak into the hospital to see Meghan. Yes, we did sneak in through an unlocked door and up the back stairs!

It was so good to see her - we just hugged and kissed her like crazy! By early on Sunday, Meghan had two doses of IV antibiotics and was feeling better. The doctors came in and we were able to talk with them at length. Meghan did not have a stone blocking her kidney so they did not need to operate - thank God! However, she does have an abnormality in her kidney that will require further tests to determine next steps.

Meghan is back in her dorm and headed back to classes today. She's tired but getting back into the swing of things. I mentioned in an email to family eariler that I was sure this little anomaly was a MacLean thing, however, since our youngest niece on the Gunning side also has had problems, were not sure the Gunning side is immune!

Thanks to all of you who have sent well wishes and prayers for Meghan's speedy recovery. We are profoundly blessed by a wonderful family and the greatest friends. Here are some photos of Meghan in the hospital and of our walk around the grounds.

February Birthdays

February marks the beginning of birthday season for the Gunnings. There are five family birthdays, inlcuding Brian and Patrick. Happy Birthday to all our famiy February birthdays and a special happy birthday to Patrick - he turned 16 in the 19th.

Patrick chose to mark his 16th birthday much differently than the girls. As much as I enjoyed planning and providing wonderful Sweet 16 parties for Meghan and Ryan, Patrick wanted nothing to do with that plan. He chose to mark his 16th with a visit from his buddy Nick with homemade cookies from Nick's mom (Patrick's other mom) and a visit from the Birthday Fairy. To be truly honest, realizing that my baby is 16 was a little sad for me! They grow up way too fast.

Each year we all hope for one good snow storm - a storm that is strong enough to allow the kids a day or two off school and mom and dad a day of liberal leave! Those of you who are familiar with the Baltimore-Washington metro area know that the kids have a pretty decent shot as schools close just because the potential for winter weather exists. You also know that liberal leave is rarely offered, even with the state closes roads and public transportation. Well, this week, we all got our wish thanks to some snow followed by sleet and freezing rain! It was really nice to snuggle with the kids watching movies all day! Ryan began the search for a college in her junior year of high school. She has always had an affinity for Virginia Tech, just like her affinity for her cousin and his best friends! We've looked at several schools, and attended open houses. Happily, Ryan has received her first acceptance! She has been accepted at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina. She likes the school and the programs, but is anxiously waiting to hear from other schools. Stay tuned ...

After a much needed break over the holidays, Meghan headed back to Miami to begin her new resident assistant job and the second semester of her sophomore year! The new job is a great opportunity for Meghan, but adds to an already hectic schedule so we don't hear from her as much as we would like! So far, she loves the job, loves her classes and is exciting to be working with the elderly in her practicum this semester. Hopefully she will be home for a weekend in February. We miss her bunches!

We are so looking forward to celebrating the holidays this year. We all love Christmas and this time of year. The air is full of excitement and anticipation. Typically, the air is also full of panic for me! Not this year! For the first time since the kids were really little, I was able to stick to my plan! I wanted everything done early so we could relax and enjoy our family time together. It is the 17th of December and I have accomplished (somewhat) everything on my list! The house is decorated. The cards are done and in the mail. The gifts are purchased and somewhat wrapped. The house is somewhat clean and the laundry is somewhat done. Meghan comes home tomorrow and we are free to bake all weekend! I am so excited not to be running around like crazy trying to make this small miracle happen. This year, the small miracle will still occur, it's just more of an evolution than a whirlwind!

Our heartfelt best wishes for a magical Christmas season and a blessed new year to all of our friends and family.

Another milestone

As if we didn't have enough great November happenings, Patrick has completed drivers' education and got his learner's permit! As many of you know, in our house, teaching kids to ride a bike and drive a car is daddy's job! There's not enough medication in the world for Donna to be involved! Patrick is eager to drive whenever possible and Brian is happy to help! It gives them free reign of the cd choice, a new treat for both of them! So, if you're out and see Patrick behind the wheel, be kind, he's still learning!

While we were in Miami, we took a little side trip and spent some time wandering around a park on Key Biscayne. It's truly a beautiful place. We saw amazing foliage and natural sea sponge, and a coconut washed up on the beach from Tropical Storm Fay!

It was nice to spend some down time with Meghan before she started school and we headed back to Maryland.

Brian and I spent the last weekend getting Meghan back and settled at the University of Miami. We rented a car and unpacked her storage unit and then headed off to the University to check into her room and begin the long process of unpacking and determining what she still "has to have!"

Her dorm is further around the lake this year. Although the view freshman year was amazing, this is still pretty nice. Brian and Meghan had lots of fun deciding where to put all her things in her new room. So much fun, that we rewarded Brian with a trip to Walmart, Target, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I don't think he'll make that mistake again!

Brian and I have been married for 20 years! In some ways our time together has flown by and in other ways it has been a "long and winding road!" We have worked hard to build our life together managing the balancing act of marriage, parenthood, and careers. With a profound faith in God and trust in his plan for us, we weathered the rough times and have been awed by the many blessings we have received over the years. We are older and wiser and hopefully kinder and gentler, all of which we will need as we embark on the next 20 years. Just like in the beginning, the future is a mystery, but now we know the magic is in the journey. The love we have in our hearts will last forever ...

Travis' Visit Home!

We were lucky enough to have Travis home for two weeks at the end of July. He is stationed in Oklahoma so Duncan and Sherri get to see him, but we haven't since Christmas. He is enjoying the Army and his work on the Patriot Missiles. His unit will deploy to the Middle East next Spring - so we will take advantage of any time we get with him!

Ryan’s college search …

Ryan and I have been on the road looking at schools. She really enjoyed our trip to Charleston and found the school and the city really charming. The College of Charleston is as rich in history and southern traditions as the city. The cobblestone sidewalks, old victorian homes and wisteria dropping through the trees was a beautiful back drop to a real contrast - a school that is historical on the outside with all the necessities of a 21st century education on the inside! And, with Bobby Crimmons as the basketball coach, Brian says it stays on the list!

Our trip to North Carolina was interesting. While the area is beautiful and the schools great, Ryan didn’t get the same feel as she did at some other schools. A tour guide really can make or break a student’s perception of a school. Our trip to Wake Forest wasn’t as impressive as I was hoping – for that reason. When even the swings didn’t win her over, I discovered I’ll have to wait for Patrick!

Our visit to High Point University was the exact opposite! We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. The personalized parking space and the impeccable grounds were only trumped by the tour via golf cart! No need to walk around in 90 degree heat when you can tour a school in a golf cart! While the campus is beautiful and clearly there is an enormous investment in the facilities, we were left wondering what kind of investment was being made in the academic programs. In the end, we decided it was worth keeping on the list and we will return for a fall open house.

On the way out of town, we decided to take a drive through Elon University. Elon is another incredibly beautiful campus in North Carolina. After some internet research, we discovered that Elon has made a substantial investment in its academic programs in addition to the facilities and we will be back for a fall open house here as well.

As of now, the top contenders remain Virginia Tech (much to the delight of many family members), Clemson, College of Charleston, Elon and High Point University. Stay tuned …

Gunning Family Fun Nights

Brian and I truly enjoy spending time with our kids and their friends. We are grateful that they want to spend time with us, too! So, when we can, we try to make things extra fun. Our best invention to date is Outdoor Movie Night. We borrow a projector, hook it up to a laptop and some computer speakers, project it onto a sheet hung on the garage and, voila! Outdoor Movie! What makes it more fun is a fire in the pit and the fixings for smores! This particular night, Patrick's friends got first dibs on the front row!

Another family favorite - Apples to Apples! This is a great game for a group of people. Patrick's friends got first crack on this particular night, too!

Summer Fun

We didn't have too many lazy, hazy days this summer, so we grabbed some fun when we could! Our neighbors, especially Christopher and Catherine, provide many laughs for our family. Chris and Catherine and I spent an entire afternoon together. After a trip to Chik Fil A for dream cones, we decided it would be fun to wash the cars. I quickly remembered that washing cars is code for water fight!

Patrick played the role of Steve, the surfer dude, and Ryan worked as an assistant director on the Talent Machine’s summer production of Camp Hawya.

This is version 2.0 of a show written by two former Talent Machine kids. Patrick had a great time doing the show and did a great job with his role, while Ryan learned a lot about directing and producing.

Tara, Taylor and Dallas hang out with the Gunnings for a while in July. It was great to spend time with the Bromwell crowd – we have missed them – they are getting too big, too fast. We had crabs and lots of family time!

Tara and Justin are very proud of their little Ezio and they have good reason - he’s a great baby! For those of you who don’t remember Tara as a baby, Ezio looks just like her when she was little.

Summer Mission Trip - Katrina Victims Still Need Help

Brian, Meghan and Ryan, along with 32 others from our parish – Our Lady of the Fields – traveled to Mississippi to help those still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. They stayed at Project Hope and Compassion and spent five days hanging drywall, painting, landscaping, and readying a restored school, St. Thomas the Apostle, to open in September. These are pictures of the group during the trip.

Brian and Patrick went to the DC United game on Saturday night. This was Justin's confirmation gift to Patrick. Both Brian and Patrick had a great time enjoying the sport they both love and each other! Thanks, Justin, for creating more wonderful family memories!

This Mother's Day was particularly special for me. I was able to celebrate with my husband and children, with my sister and her family, and with my own mother and father. What a joy to be together as a family!

Fond Farewells and New Beginnings

Justin, Sara and Addie headed for the Phillipines and Rachel and Trey introduced Riley Jane to the family. We had a wonderful family gathering to send Justin, Sara and Addie with warm wishes for a wonderful experience. We will miss them terribly, but at the same time, we are envious of the adventures ahead of them.

Riley Jane entered our family on April 22, 2008. She weighed 8lbs. 13 oz. and was 20" long! She's a beautiful baby as you can see! Rachel, Trey and Riley are headed to Hawaii in June and we will miss them, too. We are so lucky to have such exotic places to visit!

In April, Patrick was confirmed at Our Lady of the Fields in Millersville. It was a wonderful celebration marking this milestone in Patrick's life. Brian and I were thrilled when Patrick decided to ask Justin to be his Confirmation Sponsor. In our minds, he was the perfect choice.

Justin is Patrick's godfather and has been an integral part of his life. Justin took care of the basics - making sure Patrick knew everything about about Star Wars and that babies are "chick magnets!" But, more importantly, Justin taught Patrick about life. By his example, Justin has shown all of our children that living by your convictions using your moral compass allows you to live your life with a sense of freedom. It gives you the courage to test your own boundaries because you are aware of their limits.

Thanks, Justin, for being a wonderful godfather, nephew, cousin, and sponsor. It has been an honor to watch you grow into an amazing man. We can only hope that Patrick follows in your footsteps.

Spring is Here!

The air is crisp and the sun is warmer. The trees are budding. The grass is green and growing. Every day I see more signs of spring. Spring for the Gunning's means school musicals, band trips and concerts, AP exams, final semester projects and research papers, and Meghan coming home.

At the end of March, Ryan and Patrick participated in the Pit Orchestra for Pirates of Penzannce. It was a great experience. Patrick spent the first weekend of April playing in the Pit for his former middle school's production of Wizard of Oz.

At the end of April, Ryan and Patrick participated in their school's band trip to Virginia Beach. 250 students and 35 chaperones spent three days competing in instrumental and vocal competitions with high schools from across the country. There were schools from Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, Connecticut, Ohio, and Wyoming! The trip was a lot of fun, the groups performed well and were rewarded for their hard work with trophies and awards. Best of all, the festival director complimented our band director on her well-behaved and well-mannered Archbishop Spalding High School students!

I've been going on band trips since Meghan was in 6th grade. This year marks my 8th trip. These trips often involve long bus rides, long days at performance sites and long days at amusement parks or other venues. For many - kids and adults - long days can end in crankiness and irritability. But, each year, these kids amaze me. Not their talents for they are all gifted. Maybe these kids are unique, and maybe they're not! But what I see in these teenagers every year is all that is good in teenagers - they are kind, compassionate, well-mannered, respectful and supportive.

May will begin with Spring Concerts and Meghan's trip home after her first year in Miami. We are all excited for Meghan to be home for the summer.

Our roller coaster ride as parents of a college student!

Just as we learned how to deal with life in our house without Meghan, she was home for Christmas. Then, just as quickly, back to Miami in January. Now, in about 24 hours, she'll be home again!

Having our oldest child leave for college was a huge adjustment for our family - our whole dynamic changed. I remember feeling so empty - a feeling confirmed one morning when I glanced down the hallway and saw no light in her bedroom.

Poor Brian - he was happy for Meghan, but missed his little girl. And, he had no idea how to deal with me! In his infinite male way - he wanted to fix it! I had to tell him, "I am just sad. I won't stay this way forever, but for right now, it's okay for me to be sad." Bless his heart!

We have come along way in our new life as the parents of a college student. We have survived the first goodbyes, the first hysterical phone call, the first college paper, etc. And, we survived the first trip home! Yes, in our house, the rules still apply!

And, now, the roller coaster continues. Meghan is so excited for spring break and home cooked meals, a bigger bed, someone else to do laundry, her own room, and time to do nothing. Brian and I are smarter parents and know now that she will spend more time catching up with friends than with us!

When she leaves again, I will be sad and so will Brian - but for now, we will cherish the time we have with her for we know it won't last forever.
